Chalet Gingerbread

Alastair Sawday's | Special Places to Stay | French Holiday Homes

Surrounded by young chalets and gardens - which become one big white carpet in winter — Gingerbread is one of the youngest. On the inside, it must also be one of the most splendid: a great cathedral ceiling on the first floor, a home-cinema below (satellite TV on a 1.2m wide flat screen, Bose surround sound — wow!). It's a huge space, seriously swish, three floors of terracotta tiles and timber floors, interior doors panelled and stained, and walls and ceilings white or wood-clad. The dining area leads to a decked south-facing terrace, an open tread staircase invites you to the second level, the sitting area has heaps of smart coordinated sofas and the kitchen trumpets every new thing. No question this is the bees-knees for winter: logs piled high in the garage, boot warmers in the drying room, the ski lift five minutes by navette. Megève — "the 21st arrondissement of Paris" — has cobbled streets of chic shops and even chic-er people, two summer toboggan trails, 87 lifts, 97 restaurants and a vast outdoor pool. All this is a short hop in the car. Prepare to be spoiled. 1km from ski liftEntry 326
